Jallikattu, also called eru thazhuvuthal ("embracing the bull"), is held in Tamil Nadu at the Pongal harvest festival, especially on Mattu Pongal, the day that honours cattle. Its name comes from salli (coins) and kattu (a tied bundle), after a purse of coins once tied to the horns.
